Remembrance Day @ CKSS

posted Nov 11, 2016, 10:43 AM by Ross Thomson   [ updated Nov 28, 2016, 5:43 AM ]

Here is an outline of how Remembrance Day was observed at Craig Kielburger today.

Period 2, classes watched a video created by Kyle Hume and Anna Burnett's classes. Here is a link to the video:

At the end of the video there are several questions that were used as discussion starters with classes. Teachers and students reflected on and discussed the importance of the day. Students were encouraged to use social media to share their thoughts about the day, the video presentation and/or any words/thoughts of thanks using the hashtags #CKSSRemembers, #RememberThem and tag @KielburgerSS and/or @RoyalCdnLegion.

During Periods 2, 3 and 4, students were asked to visit the atrium where a display was set-up for Postcards for Peace. Students and staff were able to sign a postcard and write a short message. The postcards were given to a rep from the local Milton chapter of the Legion who visited the school during Period 4.

At 11:00 a.m. the entire student body observed a moment of silence.

We are thankful for the work of our students who created the video and the other activities, and for the respect shown by all of our students today, as we remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedoms.

Teen Health & Wellness Database Available

posted Jan 11, 2016, 9:48 AM by Ross Thomson   [ updated Feb 3, 2016, 10:21 AM ]

From Colleen Kelly, HDSB Online/Web Library Technician:

"Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers allows teens and young people to research health-related issues important to their physical and mental well-being.  It’s both a research/report tool and a self-help resource that can be easily navigated either by browsing or keyword search.

As with all Library Services information databases, this site can be automatically accessed within the HDSB IP range.  If you are outside of the IP range, you will see a login page asking you to input your Network Username and Password.  Once you have entered the information, you will be taken to the Teen Health & Wellness homepage.

The Teen Hotlines app is available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android tablets, and chromebooks.  It is not available for Blackberry devices.  This free app lists hotlines, help lines, and Web sites organized by subject.  From school violence and depression to eating disorders and suicide, these national organizations can also refer teens to state and local services in their community."

Globe and Mail Graduate Survey

posted Jan 6, 2016, 9:30 AM by Ross Thomson   [ updated Jan 25, 2016, 6:31 AM ]

Attention, graduating students! As part of a Globe and Mail project on your generation, we are looking for engaged, thoughtful high school students to complete this survey. It will be used to shape a Globe’s project driven by and about your generation. You, Canada’s high school grads, will be our sounding board. (We're also seeking input on your generation's name.)  While the survey asks for email addresses - to discourage random adults and bots from weighing in - all the answers will be kept in confidence following strict Globe policy. But, if you’re willing to participate more, there is a place to click “yes” at the end. We hope you will.
